Introduction |
ElectronicHangul (EH hereafter) developed by W. Bostow is known as another Hangul solution to US MacOS. I couldn't have any chance to see how it works though.
|
Compatibility with KSC-5601 |
Since EH uses its own code scheme which is not compatible with any other Hangul codes including KSC-5601 which is a de facto standard, it comes with code converter.
However, unlike HKK which does code conversion transparently, EH does not work with Wansung fonts in applications and you have to do code conversion manually by yourself. It causes big, sometimes painful inconvenience especially on telecommunications. For example, with EH the only way to view Hangul web pages is, according to author, to save the Hangul web page you want to see to a file and convert this saved text file to EH-compatible text file by using code converter, then open this converted file in your hard drive with your web browser. Want to see the web page the way it is? Download all graphics too. Repeat these steps for each page.

Fonts |
EH provides five PostScript type 1 Hangul fonts and they don't include hanja. Hangul fonts included in EH are rectangular and author insists they can be used in any application. However, I doubt if the any application includes telecommunication programs.
I have seen sample output printed with EH Hangul fonts several years ago because one of my friend received a trial copy of EH from author. They were mediocre and can't be compared to fonts included in other Hangul solutions available nowadays. Of course, it was very early version of EH and I hope there have been much improvement in current version. Visit EH web site and take a look at font samples.

Final Thoughts |
If you ever want to view Hangul web pages like daily news, definitely EH is not your choice.
Author insists EH is compatible and direct Hangul input can be used with any application. However, this is also true for HKK. In many ways EH and HKK are similar. Main differences are font shape and price.
|
EH could be an alternative choice for Hangul environment in early days when there were no others except HangulTalk and it was not easy to get HangulTalk without purchasing machine from Elex. However, that has been changed. Besides KLK, especially HKK gave EH a real run for its money.
If you don't mind irrectangular fonts ( personally, as a native Korean, I believe fonts in HKK are much superior to those in EH), go for HKK. You will get even or more for fraction of money. |
