News Reader

You need a Hangul environment on your Mac first.

If you want to read few hangul news groups, Netscape and Internet Explorer are good enough for you.

/ News Watcher / YA-News Watcher / Nuntius / Hangul News Groups /

News Watcher

NewsWatcher is a powerful free NNTP news client which has built-in editor, mailer, and very convenient binary extracting.

Hangul Patching Unfortunately, since the current version of NewsWatcher does not support 2-byte languages, you have to modify application with resource editor, such as ResEdit. ALWAYS make duplicate and work with it. Patching is simple and almost same as in Mosaic.

  1. Open taBL resource in Hangul patched Eudora with ResEdit and copy 1003 resource
  2. Open taBL resource in NewsWatcher
  3. Change the names of resources 1001 and 1002 to something like 10001 and 10002
  4. Paste 1003 resource from Eudora twice and change their IDs to 1001 and 1002
  5. Delete 10001 and 10002 resources
  6. Save changes

Since this patching just nullifies ISO 8859-1 <-> Mac translation that Newswatcher uses for special characters, you have to use two Newswatcher applications (one patched for Hangul and one original Newswatcher) to read articles written in languages which use ISO-8859-1 translation like French.

Version v2.1.5 freeware

YA-News Watcher

YA NewsWatcher (Yet Another NewsWatcher) is features added modified version of NewsWatcher (source code of NewsWatcher can be downloaded at its home site). It has many features original NewsWatcher doesn't provide, like powerful news filtering, remailer support (anonymous mailing), binary posting etc. So it is very popular among heavy news readers and binary posters.

Hangul Support YA NewsWatcher has option to turn off character conversion which you have to do with ResEdit in original NewsWatcher, so you can read Hangul news without any patching job. Although these many virtues result in larger application size and steep learning curve, if you are a serious news reader, YA NewsWatcher is must have.

Version v2.4.0 (probably final release) freeware

Select None for Article Text Conversion
Edit > Preferences > Transliteration Options

Nuntius

Unlike NewsWatcher, this NNTP news reader does not provide built-in text editor or mailer but it is powerful enough for most users.
Hangul Support Current version of Nuntius can be used to read and post articles in Hangul almost correctly without any patch. Unfortunately, it has been abandoned for a while without upgrade and seems to be discontinued.

Version v2.0.4 freeware

Hangul News Groups

All newsgroups whose official(?) language is Korean have names starting with han.* such as han.sys.mac. To subscribe these newsgroups, you have to set proper NNTP news server name which carries han.* groups in your newsreader's preference first. If your server doesn't carry them, you have to choose one of many public news servers. However, they are usually or almost extremely slow and sometimes posting is not allowed. You can find a list of public news servers at : It is well categorized by group count, speed, and domain. There are few servers in Korea you can access from the States, though they are slow too. Even though I didn't test all of them, for instance, usenet.hana.nm.kr seems to carry only han.* newsgroups so that you may save time to retrieve all group list. Before you start to try these public servers, ask your ISP (Internet Service Provider) to carry han.* news groups first.

Jungshik Shin, the maintainer of Hangul FAQ posted following to han.sys.mac :

    " ....
Besides, my newsserver at net161-61.student.yale.edu is open to all hosts in EDU domain(I may open it to other hosts if asked for that by mail) and it carries all newsgroups han.*.
    .... "

Even though you are in EDU domain, it is good idea to send him an e-mail first to thank for his courtesy.
